Tips for Better Organization

  1. Sort everything by subject-either color code or alphabetize.
  2. Use binder – in binder, have a folder or pocket divider for every subject.  Keep loose papers, handouts etc. in folders by subject.  Keep a calendar in binder.
  3. Write all assignments on assignment pad.  Review to make sure they are written correctly.  Use assignment pad to keep track of tests and assignments.  Check off boxes, highlight or scratch out when homework in each subject completed.  You can also use the boxes to check off when you pull the books from your cubby or desk.
  4. Keep cubby/locker organized.  Have all subjects together; put all loose-leaf papers in appropriate folders.   Throw away all papers no longer needed.  Clean out cubby/locker at least once a week.
  5. Have one clean, quiet, organized place to complete homework.  Stock it with supplies you need to complete your homework.
  6. Write down subjects with homework on a sheet of paper and bring that to the cubby/locker to collect books to take home.
  7. Keep desk organized by cleaning out at the end of every day.  Throw papers away that are no longer needed.  Put all loose-leaf papers and handouts in appropriate folders.
  8. Use bookmarks to mark place in books.
  9. Review notes/chapter every night.  Don’t wait until the last minute to start studying.
  10. Go through pencil bag at least weekly to make sure there are enough pens and pencils available.  Keep pencils sharpened.
  11. Place everything in book sack at night after homework completed to have ready in the morning.
  12. Use white board, magnetic board or cork board to keep dates of important things in your room.  Ex. Tests, assignments, activities, etc.
  13. Put all homework on desk at home.  Take out only what you’re working on at the time.  Place it back in book sack when complete.
  14. Clean out folder after every Chapter test.  Either throw it away or place it in another folder, organized by subject, to keep it to review for the unit test.
  15. Use index cards to write vocabulary words on or other information to study for tests.  File in card box by subject.
  16. On assignment pad, make two columns, one for written homework, and one for homework to study.
  17. Check book sack before you leave school for the day.
  18. Buy extra textbooks on e-bay to keep at home.  Find out from teachers what books are online.
  19. Set goals for yourself.  Make sure they are realistic.  Break large, general goals down into smaller, more specific ones.  Write your goals down and keep them in a highly visible place where you can see them every day.
  20. Designate rewards for goals that you set.  As you achieve your goals, reap the rewards.  This will keep you motivated throughout the year.  Ask your parents to help you determine the rewards.
  21. Before you go to bed each night, prepare your clothes for the next day.  This keeps you from spending extra time in the morning looking for the things you need.
  22. Use graph paper for math problems.  This keeps the numbers in straight columns and helps complete math quicker without confusion.
  23. If you don’t understand a lesson, ask for help immediately.  Don’t get in a situation where you’re totally confused and too far behind to catch up.
